There is no single right number, because the premium rises as the bar gets smaller. The table below is what we charge over spot on every gold bar we hold at this moment, so you have a real ladder to measure any quote against.
Spot is a wholesale price, not a retail one
Spot is what a troy ounce of gold trades for between the people who move it in bulk. Nobody sells you a finished bar at that price, because somebody had to refine it, stamp it, ship it, insure it and hold it until you walked in. What you pay on top is the premium, and whether it is a fair one depends on the bar you are being offered.
So here is ours, on everything we have, with nothing rounded and nothing left out.

Work out the premium on any quoteReading the ladder
Read the last column down the table and you will see it fall as the bars get heavier. That is not a discount for buying more. It is that making a bar costs a refiner roughly the same whatever it weighs, so that fixed cost is a big share of a small bar and almost nothing on a large one.
Which means a percentage on its own tells you very little. A premium that would be steep on a kilogram bar is ordinary on a 5 g one, so compare like with like or you will talk yourself into the wrong bar.
Checking a price somebody else quotes you
You need three things, and a shop that will not give you all three has told you something useful already.
- The weight in grams, not in vague sizes.
- The purity, which on an investment bar will be 999.9.
- The asking price in Singapore dollars, with everything included.
Put those into our calculator and it works the premium out against live spot for you. Then find a bar of about the same weight in the table above and see how the two compare. That is the whole check, and it takes about a minute.
What the premium should already cover
A premium pays for the refiner's work, the shipping and insurance to get the bar here, the cost of holding it, and our margin. It should not be quoted to you and then have things added to it at the end. On an investment gold bar there is no tax to add, and collection from our shop costs nothing, so the figure you see is the figure you pay.
If a quote climbs between the shelf and the till, ask what the extra is. A premium is a price, not an opening position.
Two bars, same weight, different premium
That happens, and it is not a mistake. A cast bar is poured and is the simplest thing a refiner makes, so it usually carries the least. A minted bar is pressed and finished, often sealed in a card with its assay certificate, and it carries more for that work. A commemorative design or a Kinebar takes more work again.
The premium is only half of a round trip
Buying is one side of it. The day you sell, what matters is the gap between what a dealer sells that bar for and what they pay for it, and that gap is the spread. We publish ours on every product page, beside the price, rather than leaving you to discover it on the way out.
