Why silver behaves differently to gold
Silver is roughly eighty times cheaper per gram than gold. The same money buys far more metal, and far more bulk to store. Silver is also the more volatile of the two. It has real industrial demand as well as investment demand, which tends to amplify its moves in both directions. Many buyers track the gold/silver ratio to judge which of the two is relatively cheap at a given moment.
Bar size and premium
Premium per gram falls sharply as silver bar size rises. A 1 kg cast bar carries a much lower premium than the equivalent weight in 1 oz coins. A 100 oz or 1000 oz bar is lower still. The trade-off is divisibility: a 1000 oz bar has to be sold whole. Buyers holding silver as a long-term position usually favour the largest bar they are comfortable storing.
GST on silver
Silver must be at least 99.9% pure to qualify as Investment Precious Metals and be exempt from GST in Singapore. Most of our silver bars meet that standard. GST treatment depends on the specific product, and we will always confirm whether an item is IPM-qualifying before you buy.
Storage and handling
Silver takes far more space per dollar than gold, and it tones over time on contact with air. That is a surface effect, and it does not change the metal content or the resale value. Keep bars sealed where possible. Large bars are heavy. A single 1000 oz bar weighs about 31 kg. Plan collection accordingly, or take insured delivery.
